Building Your Off-Grid Home Might Be More Challenging Than You Think

You’ve bought a few acres of off-grid land, and you’re ready to escape the rat race. However, your new property is not only down a rutted dirt road but also at least two hours away from the nearest building supply store. Building your new life is going to be a challenge.

While escaping big city life has been your dream, admittedly, the city has its advantages, such as convenient shopping. Also, the big city offers free delivery. In a rural area, you’re on your own, it may be just you and your pickup truck.

However, there are options. For example, your closest neighbors might have building supplies they could let you use. Also, specialized businesses are serving rural communities, including the delivery of building supplies.

If your land is down a rough, dirt road, you may have to adjust your home design around building materials that are easy to transport. For example, it’s probably not feasible for a big truck loaded with bricks to make it to your property. The same could be said for a cement truck. It may be smarter to design your home on the outskirts of town with materials found on-site, such as stone. Or, easily transportable materials such as lengths of wood that can fit into a truck or trailer.

Off-grid living takes a more creative mindset, so think about the ways you can get the materials you need for your land.
